Insulin Resistance For Men
Insulin Resistance is the hormone at the root of most chronic disease
Do you have high blood pressure, heart disease, or sexual health concerns? What about foggy thinking, weight gain, or concerns about cancer? Did you know that insulin, to varying degrees, can be at the bottom of these concerns? These diseases may seem unrelated, but they all have elevated insulin levels, also known as hyperinsulinemia, as an instigator or exacerbator. Said another way, if an elevated level of insulin is not the cause, it’s certainly making chronic health conditions worse.
Insulin resistance is the most common health disorder worldwide, affecting more people than any other condition. Wow! Since this is true, it’s important that we understand insulin resistance and how to prevent it, treat it, and reverse it.
How do I know if I have Insulin Resistance?
Knowing if you have insulin resistance is very important as most people are unaware that they have it. Here are some questions you can ask yourself (even before getting a blood test) to help you identify if you are at risk for insulin resistance.
- Do you have more belly fat than you’d like?
- Do you have frequent cravings or feelings of fatigue after meals?
- Do you have high blood pressure?
- Do you have erectile dysfunction or other sexual health concerns?
- Do you have a family history of heart disease?
- Do you have a family member with type 2 diabetes?
These questions all have connections with insulin resistance. Answering yes to even one of these questions could mean you have a high likelihood of having some degree of insulin resistance.
What if my doctor told me my blood sugars are fine?
Looking at glucose levels in the blood, also known as blood sugar, is an important aspect of identifying diabetes, prediabetes, and your risk for the complications that come with that disease. Historically doctors have looked at blood sugar to identify risks for chronic disease, but the body works very hard to keep blood sugars normal. It does this by producing more and more insulin.
It’s this overproduction of insulin that then leads to insulin resistance and chronic health conditions. Insulin resistance often shows up FIRST before a type 2 diabetes diagnosis and, when identified, allows you to start making changes and take control of your health while preventing progression to diabetes and other diseases.
